A little bit of everything

Full set of four games today at Koshien. Here’s what’s happened.

The first contest was between Nichinan Gakuen (Miyazaki) and Touhou from Aichi. This one turned rather ugly for Nichinan Gakuen from the third innig on as Touhou kept on slugging. In the end it became an 11-3 drubbing with LF Mizoguchi doing most of the damage (4-4, 3 RBI). Starter Fujishima went 8 innings, giving up 9 H,striking out 3 and giving up 2 walks.

Up next was Shizuoka (Shizuoka) vs Seiryou (Ishikawa), which was a much closer affair. In fact so close, that it was decided by a double in the bottom of the 8th. Both teams were locked at 4 going into the 8th after Seiryou had come back to tie it with two runs in the 7th inning. Shizuoka’s starter Tsujimoto first gave up a leadoff hit, then had to let the runner advance to second on a sacrfice and then Seiryou’s pitcher Iwashita delivered the final blow with a double to center. Shizuoka fought bravely, but had to pack things up losing 5-4. Yamashita thus got the win for his team, going the distance (7H, 4ER, 7K, 5BB, 149 pitches)

Mainstays Nihon Bunri (Niigata) had the third game going up against Oita (Oita). Oita were able to annoy the favourites until the 6th, keeping the game tied at 2. But in the 7th Nihon Bunri’S offense finally broke out and dealt Oita a 5-2 loss. Iizuka got the win with a complete game, tossing 145 pitches (8H, 2ER, 9K, 6BB), while his counterpart Sano took the loss (8IP, 129 pitches, 13H, 5ER, 2HR, 7K, 2BB). Nihon Bunri’s RF Hoshi delivered the final blow with a 2 run homer, going 3-4 with a walk.

Finally Oogaki Nichidai (Gifu) and Fujishiro (Ibaraki) had themselves a slugfest in which Oogaki Nichidai prevailed 12-10. Fujishiro tagged Oogaki Nichidai’s starter Takada for 8 runs in the first, but they weren’t able to hold the lead. 3B Yazaki did most of the heavy lifting for them going 3-5 with 3 RBI. Fujishiro tried their luck with shifting their starter Takeuchi to LF, but that experiment lasted only for 0.1 inning, before he was back on the mound. In the end he had to take the loss.
