Germans abroad: The week in review (06/16/14-06/22/14)

Not exactly a week in review but more of a look back at the season so far, as I have been a little lazy (forgive me).

OF/1B Donald Lutz (AAA Louisville Bats, Reds)
Lutz has had his share with the big club already this season filling in for the injured Joey Votto, but he hasn’t found his stride since being demoted back to AAA. His BB/K ratio sits at 0.25 and if that wasn’t enough, he isn’t hitting anything right now.

17 G, 7 R, 11 H, 2 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 7 BB, 28 K, 2 SB, .175/.268/.286

C Kai Gronauer (AAA Las Vegas 51′s, Mets)
Gronauer hasn’t seen signficant playing time at AAA Las Vegas and if things don’t improve quickly he might find himself out of the picture very soon with the Mets seemingly planning to promote catching prospect Kevin Plawecki to AAA which would create a logjam at catcher and Gronauer might be the odd man out there. He had his share of pinch hit AB over the past few weeks, one netting him 3 RBI on a home run against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on June 11th. But over all he doesn’t seem to get a foot in the door. And the Mets sending down Travis d’Arnaud to get him straightened out didn’t help either.

17 G, 2 R, 4 H, 3 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 3 BB, 9 K, 1 CS, .167/.276/.417

OF/1B Max Kepler (A+ Fort Myers Miracle, Twins)
Kepler finally seems to have found his groove at Fort Myers as he’s hitting .292/.292/.500 in June. He’s seen his most playing time at CF and 1B and still needs to work on his K numbers. But his OBP is over .300, which is a good sign.

49 G, 27 R, 39 H, 6 2B, 4 3B, 3 HR, 25 RBI, 19 BB, 29 K, 3 SB, 1 CS, .229/.320/.365

RHP Markus Solbach (Rookie Missoula Osprey, Diamondbacks)
Solbach found a new home with the Diamondbacks, who acquired him from the Frontier League’s Windy City Thunderbolts (for whom he went an impressive 3 G, 1-1, 0.86 ERA, 21.0 IP, 5 BB, 16 K, 1 HBP, 0.667 WHIP to start the season) and sent him to Rookie League Missoula. He appeared in one game so far, starting against the Great Falls Voyagers, and that didn’t work out that well. He scattered 8 H over 5 IP, yielding 5 ER, walking 2 while striking out 3. He is slated to make his next start against the Helena Brewers today.

1 G, 0-1, 9.00 ERA, 5.0 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 1 HR, 2 BB, 3 K

OF Maik Ehmcke (Rookie Missoula Osprey, Diamondbacks)
Maik Ehmcke now has a German teammate in Solbach, as he is also with the Osprey.  He started slowly and is probably still getting used to his new environent.

4 G, 1 R, 2 H, 1 2B, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 SB, .167/.231/.250

RHP Daniel Thieben (Rookie Pulaski Mariners, Mariners)
Thieben is back with Pulaski to start the season, working from the bullpen again. He had one appearance so far.

1 G, 0-0, 0.00 ERA, 1.2 IP, 1 R, 0 ER

OF Julsan Kamara (Rookie DSL Phillies, Phillies)
The Phillies sent Kamara to the Dominican Republic to play in the Dominican Summer League. He is still looking for his first hit, but sports a healthy .333 OBP. All his games have been at DH so far.

3 G, 2 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 SB, 3 HBP, .000/.333/.000

RHP Sven Schüller (Rookie AZL Dodgers, Dodgers)
Finally Schüller has been assigned to the Arizona League Dodgers, but he hasn’t appeared in a game yet. The Dodgers are only 3 games deep into their season, so we still don’t know whether he’ll be used as a starter or in relief.
