Spring Koshien: Duels

The Sping Koshien tournament saw two pitching duels today.

In the first game Okinawa Shougaku (Okinawa) defeated Houtoku Gakuen (Hyogo) by a score of 1-0. The only run came in the 2nd inning, courtesy of the bat of 2B Nakamura and starter Yamashiro handled the rest by tossing 9 clean shoutout innings on 112 pitches (4H, 6K, 1BB).

It was a much clearer decision in the 2nd game. Hakuoudai Ashikaga (Tochigi) thrashed Touryou (Miyagi) 9-1. The big blow game in the 4th inning when 4 consecutive Hakuoudai batters reached base on consecutive base hits. Starter Higa (8IP, 8H, 3K, 1BB, 100 pitches) held the opposition in check for the rest of the game to lead his team into the next round.

And in the last game for the day Sano Nichidai (Tochigi) took down Chinsei (Kumamoto) 2-0. The runs came in the 5th inning when Chinsei starter Suzaki allowed 4 consecutive batters to reach base. He left the game after 7IP and the bullpen kept the team in the game, but their offense wasn’t able to get to Sano Nichidai’s starter Tajima, who tossed a 5 hit shoutout with 12 strikeouts and no walks on 111 pitches. On a side note: both Suzaki and Tajima feature an interesting delivery as they both are sidearmers. Suzaki even looks like a submariner in his windup, but he doesn’t go down all the way.

Here’s a look at Sazuki’s motion.
