The Legend returns – Randy Bass throws out first pitch at Koshien

Randy Bass came back to Koshien Stadium to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the game against the Swallows on Friday.

There are quite a few articles about Bass coming back to the renovated Stadium for the first time. Read more at Sanspo, Tokyo Sports, Sponichi, Nikkan Sports and Daily Sports.

Apparently he was joking with Wada-kantoku before the game, telling him that if there’s anything he can do, he’ll gladly help (if I got the translation down correctly). The articles all point out that the pitch he threw didn’t bounce on its way to home plate. I guess that’s a big achivement. And Tigers fans still love him, as this video shows. Note the date.

He seemed to have an effect on the team on that night as they came back from a 0-3 deficit to tie it and then walk off in grand style. Kosuke Fukudome delivered a grand slam sayonara homerun in the 12th inning. First, here’s that blast.

And these are the highlights. Notice that Fukudome also tied the game via the long ball, his first at Koshien since he joined the Tigers. And Matt Murton almost went yard before him.

The Tigers are now in 2nd place in the Central League (9-8-1).
